Garrison Coats
2 years old

Diagnosis:

Garrison was found to have Ewing sarcoma in 2006.

Garrison's story:

Garrison Coats was all boy – he loved playing with his dog Red Rock, had lots of energy and liked hanging out with his cousins. In July 2006, he got sick with what doctors thought was pneumonia. But Garrison stayed sick, and that’s how his mother, Amanda, realized something more serious was happening to her once lively little boy.
It was during a visit to the hospital that doctors found a large tumor in his chest. The tumor was so large it had caused his left lung to collapse and his heart to shift to the right. The Coats family was immediately referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

At St. Jude

After a biopsy, Garrison was found to suffer from Ewing sarcoma, the second most common type of bone cancer in children. Upon learning the diagnosis, Amanda broke down. “I never thought it was going to be that,” she said. “St. Jude was the last place I ever thought we’d be.”
Since Garrison’s initial visit to St. Jude, Amanda has appreciated the great support and care the hospital provides for her family. “Not only do they care about Garrison,” she said, “but they care about keeping our family happy and provided for, too.” And meeting other families in similar situations has given Amanda comfort.
Garrison is back to acting like a typical little boy. He has two more dogs, Pepper and Gabby, to play with, and he loves to watch his Papaw drag race. Amanda believes their experiences at St. Jude have made it possible for Garrison to do the things he loves. “They’ve taken a 30 percent chance for Garrison to live and given us hope,” she said.
